Uptown Armed Robberies

Looks like a couple of groups of thugs working in our neighborhood right now. T/P reports
Beware when you go to parades. This is a prime time to catch people unaware and hit their house when they leave. Yesterday at parade time someone tried to force my gate. Know your neighbors and be alert for strangers loitering.

2nd District Email Blast

On January 28th at or about 5:30 am, the victim was walking in the 4800 block of Annunciation after leaving a bar on Tchoupitoulas Street. He was approached by a group of three to four black males. One of the males asked what was in the box he was holding. The victim related it was chicken. Another subject removed a handgun and proceeded to rob the victim of $450 in cash. The incident was not immediately reported. The suspects are described as 14-17 year old black males, unknown further.

2nd District Email Blast

On January 27th at or about 5:30 pm, the victim was washing his car in front of his residence located in the 800 block of Aline Street. A black male subject approached him and asked for directions. When the victim related that he did not know where the street was located, the black male subject pulled out a wad of money and started flipping through it – stating “maybe we are both lost”. The subject then walked away. Within moments, a second black male approached the victim. The second subject pushed an unknown object into the victim’s ribs and demanded his money. The victim did not see a weapon. He told the subject that he did not have any money on his person. The subject then fled on foot towards Magazine. Suspect #1 is a 24-25 year old black male, 5’10”, 160 lbs., wearing blue jeans and a white jacket. Suspect #2 is described as a 24-25 year old black male, 6’0”, 250 lbs., clean shaven, heavy build, with a tattoo on his neck.

2nd District Email Blast

On January 27th at or about 5:30 pm, officers were dispatched to the 3600 block of Danneel Street on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found 21 year old Henry Butler IV lying in a rear yard. He sustained at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you so much for all the support received by everyone regarding the 4605 Magazine Street proposed demolition. Much thanks, as well, to the neighboring associations who also participated.

Here’s a summary of today’s scheduled meeting at the Housing Conservation District Review Committee:

A number of BIA members and neighbors attended the meeting intending to speak against the demolition. Also a number of other area neighborhood associations also attended and planned to speak, including Audubon Riverside Association, the Jefferson Avenue Association and others.

The request to demolish was denied based on a misinterpretation of city procedural rules for scheduling the hearing and the HCDRC did not hear the applicant or our responses. The applicant indicated he would appeal the decision to City Council.

The Council meeting has not yet been scheduled, but could be held as early as February 21^st.

We will need a strong response from the association membership including letters to all Council members and a strong presence at the meeting. More to come….

2nd District Email Blast

On January 26th at or about 5:50 pm, the victim was outside his residence with a friend in the 700 block of Napoleon Avenue. The victim and the friend became involved in a verbal altercation which quickly became physical. The friend pulled out a steak knife from his pocket and stabbed the victim. Responding officers apprehended the perpetrator, who was identified as Michael Jones (WM, 6/22/62). Jones was arrested without incident. The victim sustained a non life threatening stab wound. He was treated and released from a local hospital.

Attached is a wanted poster for Jonathan Ruth. At this time, Ruth is wanted for aggravated assault and weapons charges.

4605 Magazine - PARKING!!!

I got this wrong originally. They are asking for a waiver of 11 parking spaces!! They will have 6 employees, plus janitors, vendors, and delivery's. This will never work. If you don't want your driveway blocked all day long by visitors to the MRI clinic. Sign the petition and send Thomas a letter. He will handle faxing it to Nelson Savoie. This is a bad idea!

4605 Magazine Demolition - Petition - deadline monday

Word is that there will be a split vote on this Demolition request, with C-Ray's man Nelson Savoie making the tiebreaking vote. Without virulent public outcry he is almost certain to vote in favor of the demolition.

There is a petition hanging on the door at 1008 Cadiz. Please sign it if you want to spare this building.

4611 Magazine Demolition - BIA Letter

This Letter from Tommy Ryan of the BIA zoning committee.

Neighbors:

I’m sorry to report that our ongoing efforts with the developer to preserve the historic building at 4605 Magazine Street were unsuccessful. The developer plans to demolish the historic building replacing it with a structure built to look old. I can’t understand why a city blessed with such unique architecture would even consider such an inappropriate request.
The building is a two-story wood frame structure with commercial space on the first floor and a residence above. Built around 1900 the building is in good condition, well maintained by the previous owner, has a new roof, suffered no major storm damage and has been treated for termites. It is a wonderful sound structure with Italianate detail and the last historic building in the 4600 lakeside block of Magazine Street. The building is a contributing element to the city’s dwindling architecture inventory, a quintessential turn of the century Magazine Street business-residence, and important to the integrity and historic fabric of our neighborhood. In other words 4605 Magazine Street is exactly the type building that defines New Orleans unique character and heritage. To destroy this building simply because it’s cheaper to build from the ground will set a precedent detrimental to the city, a resurgent Magazine Street and our neighborhood.
The proposed MRI clinic is entirely too intense for the neighborhood requiring variances for parking, a set-back from a busy intersection and will likely require a height variance. The parking variance request is for 11 spaces, including handicapped parking. He has 6 employees so patients and staff will be parking in our neighborhood which has no off-street parking for residents. The lot is simply not adequate for the proposed clinic and required parking. A check of available properties in the area found other locations more suitable for the proposed clinic. The selection of this property for the clinic reflects poor planning on the developer’s part.
The demolition request will appear before the Housing Conservation District Review Committee (HCDRC) this Monday, 28 January, 10:00, 7^th Floor, City Hall. This is our only opportunity to stop this unwarranted demolition. We figure that 3 of the 6 committee members will likely vote to deny the demolition request which means that Mr. Nelson Savoie, city Permits and Safety, will cast the tie breaking vote. Without strong public opposition he is likely to vote in favor of demolition.
ACTION ITEMS:

Please take a minute to fax the HDRC opposing the demolition and attend the meeting on Monday. A strong presence and vocal opposition is important. Please forward your fax to the Housing Conservation Review Committee, ATTN: Mr. Nelson Savoie. Also please take a moment to copy furnish your comments via email to Ms Stacy Head at SHead@cityofno.com and Ms Jackie Clarkson at JBClarkson@cityofno.com. Ms Head office has been most supportive while Ms. Clarkson is emerging as a strong proponent of our cultural heritage. 2nd District Email Blast - Update

Detectives identified “J-Rock” as one Jonathan Ruth (BM, 7/11/83). The victim positively identified Ruth as the perpetrator. Investigators have obtained an arrest warrant and are currently trying to apprehend Ruth in connection with this case.

On January 14th at or about 1:00 pm, the victim was standing near the rear of his home in the 600 block of Austerlitz Street. At that time he heard a noise and observed a subject known to him as “J-Rock” approach on foot. The suspect was holding a gun in his hand and began firing at the victim for no apparent reason. The victim was able to escape unharmed. J-Rock is a black male in his mid 20’s, 6’1”, 180 pounds.

On January 24^th, Second District Detectives developed a suspect in the below mentioned case. Investigators were able to obtain a positive identification and currently have an arrest warrant on file for Anthony Brown (BM, 10/22/1990). Brown has a last known address of 900 Aline Street. Officers are aggressively looking for Brown in this case.

On January 9th at or about 7:50 pm, the victim was riding his bicycle in the area of Austerlitz and Annunciation Street. A witness reported that two black males riding double on a bicycle, approached the victim and fired 3-4 times at the victim. The victim was struck twice and fell off his bicycle. The suspects then fled on Annunciation Street. Suspect #1 is described as a 14-16 year old black male, 5’6”, 130 pounds, wearing black clothing. Suspect #2 is described as a 13-15 year old black male, 5’9”, 140 pounds, no further. The victim was verbal on the scene, but could not provide any further information. Evidence located on the scene indicated that the motive for the shooting may be drug related.

The suspects in this robbery case have been identified and are currently in custody.  They are identified as Gregory Williams (BM, 11/19/90), and Anthony Landry (BM, 7/20/89). After being identified, detectives questioned both suspects. During the questioning, the suspects implicated themselves and confessed to the robbery.  Their involvement in other robberies is currently being investigated.

One of the suspects produced a silver handgun and robbed the victim of his vehicle and cell phone. The suspects drove away in the vehicle headed lake bound on Upperline Street. Suspect #1 is described as a black male, 17-20 years old, 5’10”, 175 lbs.  Suspect #2 is only described as a black male.

Don't linger in your car. These guys M.O. seems to be to rob people when they are moving from their car to their front door. Be aware. Be safe.

The developer is asking for a waiver of 1 parking space, so if anyone wants any changes to this plan, you should "speak now or forever hold your peace." The issue will be decided Jan. 28. The following email is circulating around the district. I have received countless inquiries. The email is not credible. It says…

 

A friend's mom (who works at the Metro Juvenile DA's office) called and said they have received "credible" information from their Gang prevention unit
that there is about to be a major surge in gang initiations over the next few weeks. These initiations involve random shootings that are required to
"make it" into the gang. They are especially going to be targeting women and unsuspecting people out in shopping mall parking lots. They are supposedly
going to be coming up and asking for directions. They are urging everyone to be VERY cautious and VERY aware of your surroundings. Which I know we all
should be anyway, but one more warning sure can't hurt. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!

Please note that this information is not true. There is no Metro Juvenile DA’s Office – it does not exist.  In speaking with the NOPD and JPSO Intelligence Unit’s, there is absolutely no credible information that this has occurred, or is about to occur. I also checked with the District Attorney’s Office and the NOPD Crime Prevention Unit – they have heard nothing about this alleged activity.

 

I believe this email to be nothing more than a hoax. If you look on http://www.snopes.com/crime/gangs/directions.asp, you will see a strikingly similar hoax involving gang initiations. This email is just the latest spin on an old hoax that has been flying around cyber space.

On January 10th at or about 12 noon, the victim was in front of her residence located in the 1600 block of Soniat Street. As she was unlocking her door, she observed two (2) black males running down the street towards her. Both suspects were dressed in dark colored clothing and had masks over their faces. The suspects did not say anything, nor did the victim see a weapon. The victim was able to quickly enter her residence and lock the door – thus escaping any contact with the suspects. She then called 911.  A neighborhood security guard in the area observed the suspects and gave chase. He was joined by NOPD officers. Unfortunately, the suspects made good their escape.

Vacant Lot 4630 Camp

Any of you that walk to the park via Camp street have experienced the swamp on both sides of the street at 4630 Camp. I've heard a lot of people complain "can't something be done?" I've contacted the owner to see if he can do something about it.

By the way, like the owner of 917 Valence before him this guy promised the demolition committee quick action after he evicted the tenants and demolished the property. These four vacant lots are really a nuisance. The HCDRC committee needs to be held accountable for issuing demolition permits to people in bad faith.
